TYLER WAS RIGHT. AUNTY Allison stumbled a few times during the telling of what happened, but she managed to get the story out. By the time she was finished, Katie was sitting beside her, holding her hand in a role reversal of sorts.

Allison smiled through eyes bright with unshed tears. “I’m supposed to be comforting you, not the other way around.”

Katie pushed back a stray hair that had fallen over her aunt’s forehead. “We’re in this together, Aunty Al. As they say on television, we have each other’s back.”

Allison swallowed, and offered a weak smile. “They do say that, don’t they?” She pressed a hand against her stomach. “You know, we’d had some education about date rape drugs in school, but even so I didn’t see it coming. I should have been more careful.”

Katie hugged her. “Don’t do this to yourself, please. It wasn’t your fault.” She turned silent for a moment. “It must have been hard when that girl turned on you like that. After you thought she was your friend and everything.”

Allison dabbed at her eyes. “It sure changed my opinion of wealthy people. I know I shouldn’t generalize, but those people lived like they were outside of the law. Their family owned one of the largest businesses in the area, and employed hundreds of people, but that doesn’t give anyone the right to do what they did to me.”

“And the guy who raped you...” she grimaced. “My biological father, he was just visiting, right?”

Allison nodded. “Derek Barrington. He was in a frat house with Holly’s brother when they were at UBC.”

“Where was he from?”

Allison frowned. “Do you really need to know all this?”

Katie lifted her shoulders. “I’ve been saving these questions up for a long time and we’ll probably never talk about this again, so yeah, I need to know.”

“I suppose.” Allison looked at her daughter. She’d always been tenacious, and she was right; she’d prefer not to talk about this ever again.

“He was from Grand Forks. Evidently his family had money too, but that was just an impression I got.”

“Huh.” Katie was silent for a moment. “And you never contacted him again. Asked for child support, or anything like that?”

“No. I suppose I could have proven paternity with DNA and all that, but to tell you the truth, I was quite content to never see him again. When your Uncle Cole left Independence, I felt like my life was over. I didn’t care about much for a while.”

Katie’s dark eyes reflected Allison’s pain. “It’s no wonder you had a hard time bonding with me. I think I’d have done the same.”

“You don’t have to say that, Katie.” Allison smiled through her tears. “But thanks anyway.”

“Ah, Mom.” Katie laid her head on Allison’s shoulder. “We turned out pretty well, didn’t we?”

Allison could only hug her daughter. It was the first time she’d ever called her Mom. “We did, didn’t we? We turned out just fine.”
